Modeled on Traditional European dance structures and performed in the style of the Mediaeval Troubadours to an intriguing backdrop of Dance, mime, & narrative movement.
TIM PERKINS --- Bouzouki/Guitar/Violin
Tim Perkins studied composition at Trinity College of music with Richard Arnell and is presently working for a PhD at Birmingham Conservatoire With Joe Cutler and Howard Skempton, specializing in cross-stylistic String Orchestral composition. He has composed for the Northampton Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Settecento, the Icarus Ensemble, the Decibel Ensemble, Award-winning Pianist, Mami Shikimori, and Ensemble Ox percussionist, Keith Fairbairn, and has composed for a large number of collaborative performances & CDs with internationally renowned comics Writer and Author, Alan Moore. As a session violin player Tim has toured Scandinavia extensively, exploring the boundaries of electro-acoustic violin techniques. Much of Tim’s composition is rooted in folk dance And European early music styles and textures, and is ideally suited to the instrumentation of his current group.
KEITH FAIRBAIRN --- Percussion
Keith's career has involved him in a wide variety of musical situations; his first professional engagements in the fields of both classical and the Avante Garde were with major London orchestras and chamber ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta and London Symphony Orchestra. From early in his career Keith became involved in studio work and was soon one of the very few "first call" percussionists on the London session scene. In this capacity he has played on numerous TV shows, recordings, films and major tours. Keith is also heavily involved in solo performances and recordings, chamber and duo ensembles such as Ensemble Ox, and the Oxford Trobadors.
MELISSA HOLDING – Accordion
Melissa Holding trained at the Royal College of Music in London and Kyoto University of Fine Arts. She performs regularly all over the UK and has given concerts with members of the Philharmonia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She has also played with the contemporary music group, Okeanos since 2002 (www.okeanos.co.uk). They have performed at the City of London, Spitalfields and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and have been featured on BBC radio 3’s Hear and Now and In Tune programs. Melissa has also worked for the National Theatre as composer, arranger and performer in The Oresteia (1999), and as music director for Chekhov’s Ivanov (2002), both directed by Katie Mitchell.
HELEN COPE --- Saxophones/recorder
Helen has trained for 4 years at the University of Southampton for both her Ba Hons in music and then an M Mus in Performance. Her masters allowed her to specialize in the study of Classical Saxophone, of both the French and American schools. Principally Helen has formed a career in music education, both as a peripatetic teacher of saxophone, voice, piano and clarinet, and as a specialist instructor in primary education. However, her passion for performance has never been forgotten and the chance to play in the Tim Perkins Ensemble is an exciting opportunity.
ANA BARBOUR --- Dance
Ana Barbour is a core member of the Oxford-based dance company, “Café Reason”. Her work draws on a wide range of influences from dance, Art, design, puppetry and Japanese Butoh theatre. Butoh, with its edge, stillness, power and potential for playfulness & experimentation, is the form which most suits and informs her dance practice, and in tonight’s performance, Ana’s role is to respond to the conceptual Imagery underlying many of the pieces, at times providing an element of narrative or characterization purely through movement and physical expression.
